RhAG ELECTS NEW CHAIRPERSON

Eirian Youngman was elected new Chairperson of RhAG (the movement representing parents for Welsh medium education) at its Annual General Meeting on Saturday October 13th 2007.

Eirian, aged 36, was brought up in the Swansea Valley, and attended school at Ysgol Gynradd Rhiwfawr and Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera.

After graduating from the University of Wales Aberystwych with a joint honours degree in Welsh and English in 1992, she spent some years working in the media as a producer with BBC Radio Cymru in Swansea. Alongside this work, she was able to develop her writing career, writing a number of scripts for Pobol y Cwm, creating and scripting series for Radio Cymru, and adapting novels to Welsh for several publishers.

In 1998, Eirian decided the time had come for a new challenge, and so changed direction and moved into translation.

Following periods working in the private and public sectors, she now works independently and has established her own translation business.

Since 1995, Eirian has lived in Neath. She is married with two children who are pupils at Ysgol Gymraeg Castell-nedd, where she herself is a parent governor.

Since April 2006 Eirian has been Chair of Neath Port Talbot branch of RhAG, and has succeeded in re-establishing a dialogue between RhAG and the local authority with a view to ensuring appropriate provision of Welsh medium education for the parents and their children of that county.

"It's a pleasure and honour for me to be chair of RhAG for the next three years. The admirable work of our first full-time officer, Elin Maher, over the last 18 months is already bearing much fruit, and I look forward to working with her to continue to develop RhAG's aims further throughout Wales, and ensure that there is fair provision for every child whose parents wishes them to receive Welsh medium education."
