This year's Urdd Eisteddfod is taking place in Llanelli, home of Wales' first designated Welsh medium school, Ysgol Dewi Sant, which is celebrating its 60th birthday.
There are 7 designated Welsh medium schools within Camarthenshire, 4 of which are in Llanelli. There are also a number of category A schools that mainly teach through the medium of Welsh. There are many category B schools, that should teach through the medium of Welsh to a certain extent but, the majority fail to achieve this.
In the Llanelli area the 4 designated Welsh schools are full, while the numbers in English medium schools are dropping.
RhAG’s newest local group was established in Llanelli recently to focus on the development of Welsh medium Education in the town.
RhAG understands that the county has been looking at the situation of Welsh medium education in primary schools in Llanelli. Ysgol y Ffwrnes is full and refusing children and Ysgol Dewi Sant is full. There isn’t a Welsh medium school between Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant and Ysgol Gymraeg Parc y Tywyn. RhAG is calling for another designated Welsh medium school in Llanelli. At the same time, the county should confirm the provision in the category A schools in the traditional Welsh speaking areas.
