NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR BRIDGEND?

A Welsh medium secondary school for the Bridgend area has come a step nearer with the approval of plans to move Maesteg Comprehensive school to a new site funded under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). This will vacate buildings in the village of Llangynwyd on the edge of Maesteg making space for the new Welsh medium school, expected in 2008 after a number of years of delays.

For some pupils, the new Welsh medium school will be even further away than the secondary school that currently serves the Bridgend area, Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari (which is in Rhondda Cynon Taf), but nevertheless it would represent the culmination of at least 14 years of campaigning by parents.

It is understood that the PFI project had met a number of geological problems but that these have now been resolved.

There are four Welsh medium primary schools in the county of Bridgend. Numbers at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Ogwr in the town of Bridgend continue to increase and there is a desperate need for an additional school in the town.
