A NEW WELSH medium primary school has opened in Cardiff, for once without RhAG having to put pressure on the education authority.
In February 2005 there were more than 60 applications for the 60 places at Ysgol y Berllan Deg, Cardiff, for September. It was decided that Moorlands School in Splott was the best option since it stood on its own site with three separate buildings and playing fields.
A self-standing class was opened with two teachers at the beginning of September last year with 16 pupils. Since no objection was raised, by November there was a legal basis for Ysgol Glanmorfa, Splott, to open in September 2006 and build on the existing reception class.
This is an example of a Welsh medium school being opened within 9 months of the need being identified, becoming the third primary school in the east of Cardiff, an area where, in 1981, we were told there was no need for another school. It will serve the extensive Tremorfa, Splott, Adamsdown and Roath area, leaving y Berllan Deg a long way to the north to serve Llanedeyrn, Pentwyn, Pontprennau a Penylan.
