RhAG has given a cautious welcome to the Assembly Government's plan to double the number of university students taking at least part of their course through the medium of Welsh by the year 2010, warning however that they are starting from a very low base.
The Assembly government has earmarked £1m over three years to develop Welsh medium education in the universities, chiefly, it would appear, by establishing a Welsh Medium Education Development Centre.
Currently, there are fewer than 4% of university students in Wales receiving at least a part of their education through the medium of Welsh, although Dr Wyn Jones, a lecturer in the politics department of the University of Wales Aberystwyth, claims that "the real situation is much worse". There is, of course, a percentage of Welsh medium students who go outside of Wales for their further education, and this will effect the demand to a limited extent, but in reality the Assembly Government has made no more than a start on a huge task.
Many argue that it is not enough to provide a modicum of Welsh within the English medium system, and are calling for the establishment of a Federal Welsh Medium College to be run in parallel.
